Weeks 7-10: Form, Contours, Positive/Negative Space, Perspective

Lots of excellent drawing going on at the Ranch during the past several weeks! We worked on study sketches showing the roundness and contours of veggies and various objects, while aiming for accurate proportions. Students got into using large format paper and charcoal while studying texture, light, and shadows.

Shown above are pumpkins by Kevin. Left is his smaller study sketch and to the right is his large charcoal drawing.

Upper left are study sketches by Francisco; upper right is his large charcoal drawing. Lower left is Juan's study of a lantern; and to the right is his large format charcoal drawing.

Above left is Enrique's contour sketch of a pumpkin. Above right is Victor's large format charcoal drawing of a dolphin vertebra.

Students learned to look for the negative space around the egret to form the contour edges of its body. Upper right is Francisco's study of positive/negative space. Upper right shows his finished egret. Lower left is Cristian's egret; and lower right is Jazmin's final sketch.

Above is Juan's carefully rendered impression of squash and a pumpkin. And to the left is his portrait of the Joker.

Everyone also spent time learning about 1 and 2-point perspective. Above is Jazmin's (left) and Erika's (right) study of 2-point perspective.

Aris
You've really put a lot of effort into improving your skills and it shows in these drawings, Aris! Excellent work in drawing contour lines, textures, and accurate proportions.

Jazmin
Your confidence in your line work continues to show in your drawings, especially in the contours of the pumpkin and fish. Keep it going! :-)

Cristian
As you gain more confidence in drawing from observation your own artistic style is beginning to show in your work. Excellent work in drawing the contours and form of the pumpkins and the egret. REALLY cool abstract drawing and your charcoal impression of the vertebra. Clean perspective sketch, too.

Erika
Your work has shown dramatic improvement during the semester, Erika! You've gained control of your line work and your eye for accurate proportions shows in your studies of the pumpkin and egret. The lighter and darker tones on the large charcoal pumpkin drawing are very well drawn.

Enrique
Wonderful drawings, Enrique, especially the contour studies of the pumpkins. The gray tones and highlights on the egret are a nice touch!

Francisco
Your bold study sketches and large format charcoal drawings are a big step toward becoming an artist, Francisco. The positive/negative drawing of the egret shows your confidence in experimenting with techniques and materials.

Kevin
You've punched through to a whole new, confident level of drawing, man! Your smaller contour studies and large charcoal drawing of the pumpkin is a big breakthrough in your observation skills. The pencil work in your egret shows a bold, creative direction in sketching. And you put together a tight perspective sketch, too.

Juan
Quite simply, your smaller sketches as well as your large charcoal works are exceptional pieces, Juan. Hope you can stop by and draw with us sometime in the future!

Victor
Your work is REALLY starting to shine, Victor. You're starting to loosen your lines to show a more expressive art style and accuracy in proportions. The large charcoal study of the dolphin vertebra is a wonderful new direction for you--keep it going!
